Project Save Downtown Cumberland
I just heard that plans are underway open-up the two-block stretch of downtown Cumberland for parking. Are you kidding me??? Do people really think this is a solution to anything??? I think not!
It is my opinion that the biggest mistake that the city of Cumberland could possibly make would be opening the pedestrian-only area of downtown Cumberland for parking, for the simple reason that it will make Cumberland exactly the same as every other small town in the area. In fact, my idea to bring people to the Queen City involves the exact opposite approach -- Expand the pedestrian-only area of Downtown by another block, and employ pedal-powered vehicles to transport visitors from perimeter parking lots to Downtown shopping,Canal Place,Train Station, etc. Not only would this distinguish Cumberland from other small towns, it would creat many unskilled labor jobs for locals. If you want grandeur attention, install a mini railway system throughout town to cart folks around. If you want to really think big, build a geodesic dome over a few city blocks.
My point is,If you want to distinguish Cumberland from Frostburg,Hancock, and all the other small towns along I-68, one must think outside of the box. Give people a reason to stop here, instead of there, while traveling along I-68…. better yet, give people a reason to choose Cumberland as a destination location, instead of just a place along the highway to gas-up.
